Another of the ancient cities of our country is the administrative, economic and cultural

center of Andijan region. It is one of the largest industrial cities of Uzbekistan. According to
information, the toponym “Andijan” in Turkic-Mongolian means “a place by the stream”. In fact,
the city of Andijan is located on the banks of the stream of this name. In the works of Arab
geographers and other ancient historical sources, the city of Andijan is mentioned in the forms
Andiyon. Andikon. Andigon.[1] During the time of Zakhiriddin Mukhammad Babur, Andijan
took the “Turkic” form. In the work of Iskhakhon Ibrat “History of Ferghana” there is interesting
information about the toponymy of Andijan: This Andijan was previously Andigon, and when
translated into Arabic, it becomes Andijan, since “kofi” is read as “jim” in Persian Arabic. Here,
the word Farangi is afranj in Arabic, and bangni banj. Kofi is “j” in Persian Arabic. It must have
been Andigon.

The word Andigonand’s. The Uzbeks call the Turks a clan. Andijan It was also famous

during the time of Oguz Khan. It is said in the history of “Kutadgu” that Afrosiyob, the king of
Turan, made Andijan his capital and traveled from the city of Konikduz to Tashkent and
Andijan.[2] However, according to the old sayings, Andijan is actually Odina. Odina was
Afrosiyob’s daughter, and he gave her a palace and a garden, and named her after her. They say
that Odina was corrupted into Andijan by the language.

Asaka. There are various sources of information about the origin of the name Asaka.

According to Professor T. Tursunov, the name “Asaka” is associated with the Sak tribes who
lived in Fergana in the 6th - 5th centuries BC. Because this tribe was also known in some places
as “assakens”, where “asvaka” means horse, and “assaka” means cavalry. Archaeologist V.
Matboboev tried to substantiate the above idea with the images of horses found on stones in
the eastern part of the valley and put forward the idea that thoroughbred horses were bred in
these places. [3] Also, the toponymist scientist S. Karaev confirms the above ideas by stating
that the name of the village of “Akhtachi” in the Asaka district is Mongolian and means “horse
doctor (sinchi)”, “horse breeder”. Information about Asaka is mentioned in the works of the
19th-century historian Avaz Mukhammad Attar in his works “Tarikhi Jakhonoma” and “Tarikhi
Khokand”. According to him, the Khan of Kokand, Khudoyorkhan, built a fortress in the territory
of the city of Asaka, and the Khan also had a dacha here. The Shahrikhansoy canal, dug during
the Kokand Khanate, played a great role in the development of the city. Shahrikhan. Shahrikhan
was founded during the Kokand Khanate and gradually became one of the major economic
centers. According to the information in the work “Tarikhi Mukhajiron” by Dilshodi Barno, a
contemporary of the Kokand Khan Umarkhan, Umarkhan founded Shahrikhan in 1821-1822.
[4] After founding the new city, Umarkhan brought craftsmen from different regions of the
khanate and ordered merchants not to stay here for several years in order to develop trade. [5]
Historian Mirzo Alim Mushrif wrote, “Shakhrikhan was prosperous, its grain was enough for
the Havokand soldiers, and even more was used as a warehouse.” The toponym Shahrikhon is
also associated with the name of the founder – “Shakhrikhan”, that is, “the city of the khan”.
Khojabod. The center of the district of the same name. Local historians and toponymists
associate the origin of the name of the city with the name of Khoja Abdullo Mavloni Kazi.
