Clostridium, the causative agent of sheep injectable necrotic hepatitis. A new strict anaerobic, motile, thick, polymeric rod-shaped microbe. Forms spores in the external environment and under adverse conditions. Does not vegetate in normal nutrient media. In the Kitt-Tarottsi medium, petroleum jelly forms a turbidity and few gas bubbles appear. Slowly melts the milk and dissolves the gelatin. Releases strong poison. Guinea pigs die in 12-36 hours if infected. At the site of injection, the connective tissue and adjacent muscles develop a yellowish or pale pink swelling. Muscles are pale, internal organs are unchanged.
