Abstract:
This article analyzes the factors influencing the choice of athletics
among young athletes and motivational approaches to their involvement in
sports. The study examines how biological, psychological, social and pedagogical
factors affect interest in athletics. It also deeply analyzes the age, physical
capabilities, personal interests of athletes and the motivating role of the
environment (family, coach, society). Internal and external forms of motivation,
methods of strengthening them, and effective methodological approaches aimed
at increasing interest in sports are considered. The article also includes practical
recommendations for the conscious and sustainable involvement of young
athletes in sports.

Introduction
In the world of sports, athletics is recognized as the “queen of sports,” and
its importance is invaluable not only in high-level competitions but also in the
physical and mental development of young athletes. Athletics, as one of the main
types of sports, includes exercises such as running, jumping, and throwing, and
plays a significant role in developing children’s physical activity, strengthening
general physical preparedness, and fostering a stable interest in sports (WHO,
2020). The process of choosing types of athletics among young athletes depends
on many factors. These include biological (age, gender, physical capacity),
psychological (interest, self-confidence, motivation), social (influence of parents,
coaches, friends), and pedagogical (quality of physical education at school,
coaching style) factors. In particular, intrinsic motivation – that is, the child’s
desire to engage in sports voluntarily – serves as the foundation for achieving
high sports results (Deci & Ryan, 2000). At the same time, extrinsic motivating
factors – such as rewards, recognition, and parental support – are essential tools
for developing a stable interest in sports. In today’s context of globalization and
technological advancement, attracting children to sports is becoming
increasingly challenging. Digital technologies, sedentary lifestyles, and
distracting factors have a negative impact on the health of the younger
generation (UNESCO, 2023). Therefore, motivational approaches to choosing
athletics, modern educational methods, and an individual approach to
identifying and encouraging athletes’ needs are becoming more important. The
factors influencing the choice of athletics among young athletes will be
thoroughly analyzed, the psychological mechanisms of motivation will be
revealed, and recommendations for fostering sustainable interest in sports will
be provided. The scientific and practical significance of this topic lies in its vital
role in promoting a healthy lifestyle, forming a sports reserve, and identifying
talented youth. Athletics is a complex sport that includes the natural forms of
human movement, with its main types being running, jumping, throwing, and
race walking. Its popularity among young people is, firstly, related to its
effectiveness in developing coordination, speed, agility, and endurance (IAAF,
2020). Secondly, athletics is relatively easy to organize and requires minimal
financial resources, which makes it widely practiced in many schools and sports
clubs.
The choice of athletics by young athletes depends on several factors,
grouped as follows:

Biological and physiological factors – age, gender, physical constitution, and
genetic potential play a decisive role in choosing a sport. For example, children
inclined toward sprinting often have a predominance of fast-twitch muscle
fibers, which enables them to succeed in short-distance running events
(Bouchard et al., 1999).
Psychological factors – a child’s self-confidence, desire for success,
competitive spirit, and positive emotional state increase interest in sports.
Furthermore, results achieved during training, competition with friends, and
encouragement strengthen psychological motivation (Ryan & Deci, 2000).
Social factors – the attitude and support of family members, especially
parents, are crucial in shaping a child’s interest in sports. The approach of the
coach, peer influence, and the promotion of sports heroes in the media also play
a role in the selection process (Weiss & Ferrer-Caja, 2002).
Pedagogical and organizational factors – the quality of physical education
lessons, sports school infrastructure, coaches’ qualifications, and training
methodology are important in determining the choice of sport. An effective
training program, an individual approach, and age-appropriate exercises help
develop a positive attitude towards sports.
Forms of motivation and ways to strengthen them – motivation is a set of
internal and external factors that attract a person to sports. Among young
athletes, this process is manifested in the following forms:
Intrinsic motivation – the child’s natural interest in sports, the desire for
self-expression, enjoyment, and self-improvement. This type of motivation is
stable and long-term.
Extrinsic motivation – rewards, winning competitions, parental recognition,
medals, or other forms of social encouragement. This motivation may be
temporary but can be transformed into intrinsic motivation with the right
approach (Vallerand, 2007).
Motivation in sports training can be enhanced through the following
methods: setting goals appropriate to developmental stages, individually
encouraging each child for their achievements, conducting engaging and
interactive training sessions, creating a positive environment, and fostering
healthy competition.
CONCLUSION
The process of choosing athletics among young athletes is multifaceted and
influenced by complex psychophysiological, social, and pedagogical factors.

Research shows that biological (gender, age, genetic potential), psychological
(personal interest, self-evaluation, type of motivation), social (parents, coaches,
environmental influence), and pedagogical (quality of education, sports
infrastructure) factors are interconnected and jointly influence the choice.
Athletics – running, jumping, and throwing – plays a decisive role in developing
the general physical potential of children and adolescents. Through this sport,
young athletes develop not only physically but also mentally and socially. This
helps them commit to a healthy lifestyle and improve their overall quality of life.
Motivation is the central factor in sustained engagement in sports. Studies
indicate that athletes with intrinsic motivation are more persistent in achieving
high results, while extrinsic motivation is generally limited to short-term
outcomes (Deci & Ryan, 2000; Vallerand, 2007). Therefore, coaches and
educators should pay special attention to motivational aspects when working
with young athletes. An individual approach, a supportive environment, social
encouragement, and the meaningful, engaging organization of sports activities
are of great importance.
In conclusion, to consciously and sustainably attract young athletes to
athletics, a comprehensive and systematic approach is necessary. This approach
should be based on modern psychological, pedagogical, and sociological theories
and implemented with consideration of each athlete’s individual characteristics.
Only in such circumstances will it be possible to popularize this important type
of sport in our country, shape a healthy generation, and train competitive
athletes at the international level
