Introduction.
Medical biotechnology is a branch of medicine that uses living cells and cell
materials to research, produce pharmaceutical and diagnosing products. These products help treat
and prevent diseases. From the Ebola vaccine to mapping human DNA to agricultural impacts,
medical biotechnology is making huge advancements and helping millions of people.
Purpose of work.
Some of the most recent uses of biological tech is work in genetic testing,
drug treats and artificial tissue growth. With the many advancements in medical biotechnology, there
are new concerns that arise, and they will be discussed in this article.
Material and method.
There are many promising avenues of biotechnology applications in
medicine. One of them is CRISPR technology, that uses a protein, which acts like a pair of molecular
scissors and cut DNA. They are utilized as a tool to edit genomes. It allows scientists to change DNA
and modify gene functions. Examples of its applications are correcting genetic defeats, treating
diseases, preventing the spread of diseases. However, there are some ethical cancers surrounding it.
Some studies have shown that CRISPR tech can create tumors and cancer, with DNA deletions that
are not controlled or precise. There is not a doubt, that scientists are trying to downplay the concerns
and issues, but the benefits and damages of biotech is somewhat unknown.
Another application is genetic testing 23 and Me. This technology is popular this days, that are
able to test for things like breast cancer by looking at gene mutations. Certain races are also more
likely to inherit certain mutations or human diseases, and knowing what races make up human’s
genetic materials can help him to be prepared. However, there are some issues, as reading someone’s
DNA seems to be a giant privacy breach. Imagine a doctor looks at a young child’s DNA and finds
out they are likely to develop a heart disease or some kind of cancer. Does the employer have the
right to know that or should it impact their ability to get a house, or insurance? Of course, some
biotech companies are continuing to increase privacy protection, to match all the new needs that will
arise.
To conclude, there are issues and concerns when it comes medical biotechnology, and as
making medical advancements are continued, these ethical considerations will have to be made.
